How do I figure out how many cubic yards or tons of product I actually need?

Our-easy-to-use calculators on select product pages is a good place to start. When you have an irregularly shaped area, as most are, you simply have to estimate the average length, width, and depth when inputting data into the calculator. What is a cubic yard?

Imagine a box that is three feet tall, three feet deep, and three feet wide. That’s one cubic yard. All bulk mulches and topsoil are measured by the cubic yard.

Can we pick up materials ourselves?

Yes! No appointment or call ahead is necessary. Just show up with your open bed (no camper tops) truck or trailer during regular business hours (Monday-Saturday, 7:30 am – 4 pm, and we will load your materials with our tractors in just a few minutes. You can also reserve your materials ahead of time online at no additional cost!

How much will my truck hold?

It all depends on the size of the truck. A standard half-ton pickup with a six-foot bed will hold about two cubic yards of lightweight material like mulch, or one cubic yard of heavier material like topsoil, or ½ cubic yard of very heavy material like sand or gravel.

What forms of payment do you accept?

What is fill dirt?

Fill dirt contains sand, rocks, stones, and earth and is taken from a location where soil is being removed – typically from leveling due to construction.

Can you grow grass in fill dirt?

Typically fill dirt contains rocks, stones, and clay which has little nutrients for plant life.

Is fill dirt expensive?

Depending on how much you need, fill dirt is an economical investment for you landscaping needs and is typically less expensive than topsoil.

Is top soil and fill dirt the same thing?

No. Topsoil contains organic matter which can shift or settle over time while fill dirt is a mixture of broken down rocks, sand and clay and is more stable.

How much is a dump truck load of fill dirt?

That depends on how much fill dirt you need for the job. Our fill dirt is $26 per yard and we deliver. Contact us to determine your final cost.

What is topsoil used for?

Topsoil is used for filling in low spots in lawns and along walkways. Its organic matter is ideal for growing grass, trees, shrubs, and other plants.

What is the difference between topsoil and garden soil?

Garden soil is actually just topsoil that has been enriched with compost and additional organic matter to make it even better for plant growth.

What is topsoil made of?

Topsoil is a mixture of sand, silt, clay, and broken down organic matter, called humus.

How thick should topsoil be?

If you are growing grass on topsoil, you need room for root growth. The recommended topsoil depth is between 4-6 inches.

Is bagged topsoil any good?

You certainly could get decent bagged topsoil, but some products bearing the name are not good for planting. It’s best to trust the topsoil experts here at Georgia Landscape Supply.
